What should we wear for our session?
I get this question a lot. And I have a few ideas, suggestions and guidelines.
Above all else, choose outfits that are comfortable and that make you feel good. If either of those two things aren't present, it shows. Be as formal or as casual as you like.
Choose complimentary colors for each person, but not matchy-matchy. The days of jeans and white shirts in portraits is over. Let it go, it is a tired little concept and needs its rest. Some of the most successful combinations for large families have resulted from following paint swatch cards. Inspiration is everywhere.
Avoid small, busy patterns - they often buzz on camera. Anything super bold or graphic also tends to steal the shot away from you. If you have something really bold you just have to wear - lets do a few with that and then have another option.
Classic silhouettes and choices are always a safe bet - can you imagine seeing yourself in something as dated as M.C. Hammer pants? (You know you had a pair!) Ugh.
Think about props - hats, umbrellas, fun jackets, cute socks - whatever expresses your personality the best.
If you are willing - think outside the box - I'm always open to a more conceptual shoot. Want to go glam and all 1940's? Awesome.
